A Mash-up of Good Articles for Writers
After many years in the writing, publishing, and teaching fields, I have found myself on quite a few email newsletter mailing lists. I will subscribe to them because of referrals, something I read of theirs, and because I like to support them. I open and read as many as I have the time and bandwidth for. Here is a compilation of three articles by highly regarded writers/authors that I think you should read. I try to never miss anything from them.
“The Rules of Fiction” from K. M. Weiland portrays the sometimes-frustrating conundrum that all fiction writers who want to be published eventually face. Some people swear that the only way to get published and appreciated is to follow the rules of the genre. Others swear that writing rules are meant to be broken. Weiland’s somewhat lengthy piece is worth serious consideration. Fiction writers let me know what you think about the “rules of fiction”. Do they help or hinder you as you work?
“How to Find the Right Literary Agent for Your Book” from Authors Publish is another robust and solid article about a topic that is key to understanding your place as a writer/author in the publishing industry. The Authors Publish free newsletter is something I absolutely recommend to fellow scribes and students. Notice that the piece is about finding the right literary agent. It’s another animal all together to secure one. Still a thoughtful piece.
Do you have an agent (whatever your genre is)? How did you find them?
“The Key Book Publishing Paths 2025-2026” from Jane Friedman who cannot be beat for her research, workshops, blog posts (guests and her own), and so much more. This brand-new blog post on her website just might blow your mind with the degree of information and minutia relating to the variety of options writers have today for publishing their work. Free and valuable download.
What publishing path(s) have you chosen and why?
I hope your WriteDay is fantastic!

The wealthy Kate Hamilton must marry the wounded viscount she is sheltering in her London townhouse since saving his life has ruined her. But he is a perfect candidate since he needs to marry well. When he seems reluctant, Kate proposes hiring him as her husband to disguise her love for him.
Hugh Bartram, Viscount of Dancy, has never met anyone like levelheaded Kate, thrusting herself into a scandal to save his sister from gossip. He resents Kate trying to solve everything with money, even as he admits her heart is in the right place.
Just as they wed, his sister elopes, and Dancy is captivated by the unconventional Kate as they ride across England together to prevent another scandal.
