The Red Toque: Love and Loss in the Time of Tito by CYNTHIA HERBERT-BRUSCHI ADAMS
Welcome to Books By My Friends, Cynthia! What an intriguing historical fiction story you have to share with us today. Let’s get to it!
JH: What’s the blurb for your book The Red Toque: Love and Loss in the Time of Tito?
CA: The Red Toque Love and Loss in the Time of Tito. The Red Toque reveals the little known horror of communist actions on the citizens of Slovenia, then a part of Yugoslavia. This occurred at the end of WWII and claimed up to 150,000 lives in this small country. It takes the reader through the war with a family of six Slovenian children who come of age as the war unfolds. Each has a different experience including: serving Lord and Lady Wedgwood in London, being torpedoed at sea, marrying a German, and being a German POW; the drama is constant and unpredictable but heavily based on a true story. Typical books about WWII do not include information regarding what happened right after the war. The importance of The Red Toque should not be underestimated as it models what history is repeating today with the treachery and murderous behavior of the communists and the destruction of war.
JH: What inspired you to write this book?
CA: There had always been mystery in my mother-in-law's background: what had she and her siblings gone through during and at the end of WWII and where was one of them today?
JH: What one thing do you love most about writing?
CA: I love merging with my characters. When I am deeply into my story they seem to tell me what happened to them. If I get "stuck" I know they will lead me to a valid conclusion. It's like thinking in another language.
JH: What’s next for you in the way of writing/publishing?
CA: I am trying to learn all I can about promoting my books. The Red Toque is my fourth novel and deserves attention. It is very timely considering what is happening in the Ukraine. I want to make all possible connections to see that it is read.
JH: How can readers contact you?
