Welcome to Books By My Friends, Jane! Let’s DIVE :) into your brand new release The Ocean Girl.
JH: What’s the blurb for The Ocean Girl?
JB: She escaped his net, but now he’s caught her heart. Muri was resigned to being the tenth bride of the king of the merfolk—until he disappeared on land. Now she has mere days to find him among the treacherous fairies and dim-witted humans before the throne is forfeit and his menacing rival takes control of the merkingdom. Her first shimmering glimpse of a human in a boat is so captivating, his fishing net almost ensnares her. But once on shore, she discovers that the fairies are kind, and the humans intelligent. And the man who almost caught her—a fish-catcher named Jack—is utterly handsome. Muri needs to warn the mermaids that the merking won’t be returning—he’s lying drunk in the village park, unable to shift to merman form. But she hesitates to leave the village. Muri wants to learn more of this place where humans and fairies help each other, women and men are equals, and rulers are chosen by everyone. And she wants to spend more time with Jack. But the merking’s rival is coming for her. He’ll threaten the whole village to force her to return home. To keep Jack safe, she’ll have to leave him. The Ocean Girl is a cozy fantasy romance in a fairy tale setting with lighthearted magic. It’s the beach read Éowyn packs when she goes on vacation. The Ocean Girl can be read on its own but may contain spoilers for earlier books in the series.
Note: The book contains "steamy" love scenes.
JH: What inspired you to write a mermaid romance?
JB: One of the villains from a previous book was a merman who ended up stuck on land (he deserved it!) and I started wondering about the other merpeople and what their society was like. I imagined one of the mermaids coming to shore to find out what happened to him. And of course she would fall in love with a human! In my world, only the fairies have magic, so I added some fairy characters for her to befriend on land because the magic is one of the fun parts of my stories.
JH: What one thing do you love most about writing?
JB: I always feel happier during the times when I am drafting or revising a book. I know the publishing and marketing tasks are important, but I'm hoping to be better about scheduling my time so that writing is always part of my day. I love watching the story and characters develop on the page. I know if I work through the difficult parts of the process (the planning and research), the actual writing will be rewarding.
JH: What’s next for you in the way of writing/publishing?
JB: I'm going to continue with my cozy fantasy romance series, aiming to continue publishing one book per year. I already have the next two drafted! I also hope to revise a contemporary romance I wrote in 2021 and might pitch it to a traditional publisher.

BIO:
Emily Jane Buehler published two nonfiction books—one on the science and craft of baking bread, the other a memoir of a bicycle trip from New Jersey to Oregon—before venturing into fiction. She currently writes cozy fantasy romances where everyday people (and fairies) have adventures and fall in love. They are lighthearted stories with action and adventure, love and magic, where protagonists learn to believe in themselves and find their courage. And yes, they are kissing books! She believes that by portraying positive relationships with good communication, romance novels can help readers envision such relationships for themselves, serve as a model of proper consent for young people, and portray diverse types of relationships and people. They can be a fun escape while still having depth and contributing to a better society. Emily Jane lives in North Carolina. Her favorite things include letters sent through the mail, Made-in-the-USA knee socks, and very dark fair-trade chocolate. She is passionate about living waste free and usually has one or more cats.
JH: Thanks for visiting BBMF today, Jane. Please come back when the next book in your cozy fantasy romance series is ready to share. Best wishes for success with The Ocean Girl!
