Welcome, Joyce, to Books By My Friends! You have a fun and exciting historical fiction novel to share with us today. Let’s get to it!
JH: What’s the blurb for your book?
EJD: 1926. A world of flappers, speakeasies, and bathtub gin. Alex, a cocky college graduate starts her journalism career at a small Montana newspaper. On her first day, a courthouse shootout thrusts her into the lead reporter’s role, and into the path of the town’s most eligible, and handsome, cattle rancher. That spring, an ice jam on the Yellowstone River, floods the town. Only US Army bombs can save it. Alex’s reporting draws national attention and a San Francisco newspaper’s job offer. So, she’s faced with a choice. Her dream job or her dream man. Definitely A LADY NEWSPAPERMAN’S DILEMMA.
JH: What inspired you to write A LADY NEWSPAPERMAN’S DILEMMA?
EJD: When a friend sent me a news clipping about the one and only time the US Army bombed a US city, I was intrigued and knew I wanted to write a story about that event. But I had to create a story to go with the actual facts. Thus, Alex's story was born. I originally wrote the book and set it in 1940, when the actual bombing occurred, but upon reflection, and research, into women in the newspaper business, decided to move the novel's setting to the 1920s when there would be much more prejudice towards women reporters.
JH: What one thing do you love most about writing?
EJD: Delving into the past and finding, or creating, strong women who have to deal with the difficulties of that time period to achieve their goals. There are so many interesting events that happened and have become lost, but when discovered set the stage for wonderful novels.
JH: What’s next for you in the way of writing/publishing?
EJD: After this book, I have another historical novel, THE CAMPBELL SISTERS, scheduled for release in March 2023. I'm also writing a contemporary novel and researching another historical story. So, I have lots to keep me busy for a while.
