Welcome to “The Genius Writer in YOU” May/June 2024 box.
Genius. How do you define it? The Google shuffle will lead you to the basic understanding of the word as it applies to a person with exceptional intelligence, creative power, or other natural ability. We are conditioned to understand that a genius is someone very smart intellectually, but I suggest that genius can be applied to more than a smart person. That’s the angle I believe author/educator Lisa Cron is coming from in her book that is the featured writing craft text in this box. Not that anyone has to have superior intellect to write a good story but that knowing what makes a good story that readers can identify with is an art and can result in a work of genius. One is a noun: a genius. The other is an adjective: a stroke of genius. This box and its contents encourage you to step outside of the stories you write and construct them from the perspective of the proven brain science that says humans crave story but only if it strikes certain chords. That is the genius in you as a writer. You have the story, now consider telling it according to the principles Cron explains very clearly. My educated guess is that not only will readers like your story more, but you will also enjoy writing it more. Winning!
You will also note that this box is celebrating the release of my new young adult historical fantasy novel The Mermaid Riot (Fire and Ice YA, March 2024.)
Here is a list of the contents in this box.
1. Featured writing craft book: From agent/author/educator/script doctor Lisa Cron, we are looking into how the human brain is genetically conditioned, wired she aptly calls it, to love stories. But the story has to have a particular element embedded in it to appeal to the reader’s desire to turn the pages. Hint: Who’s telling your story and why does it matter to them and why should it matter to the reader? Not only does Story Genius: How to Use Brain Science to Go Beyond Outlining and Write a Riveting Novel offer scientific evidence to back up its claims, it details the genius 😊 and relatively simple process of achieving the goal of a great novel.
2. Jewelry: “If I can’t take my BOOK I’m not going” key chain wraps it up nicely.
3. Beverage: If you aren’t carrying a flavor burst concentrate in your satchel, brief case, or gym bag yet, you might be a little behind the times. Water is good for you, but you already knew that. Mermaid Tropical Citrus flavor burst concentrate will blow your mind. One or two squirts into eight ounces of water, and well, let me know what you think. Convenience, uber tasty, and ZERO sugar because it’s from the amazing Jordan’s Skinny Syrups.
4. Not just wine glass charms: Everybody has a quirk or two. Mine is to drink almost exclusively from stemware. That includes my juice, flavored water, Pepsi, and wine. I’ve got a lovely collection of plastic stemware that I use for this, but I realize that not everyone has this oddity. I made these wine glass charms for you from replicas of old typewriter keys. No two are alike. There is one with your initial on it and the others are for guests. Yes, absolutely these can be attached to cup handles, keys, and wherever you want. Let me know if you share them at book club or some other way.
5. Mermaid soap: To celebrate the release of my new book in March, I had a friend from graduate school design and make custom handmade goat’s milk soap. The colors and scents described on the packaging are delicious. And she named the soap after one of the characters in the book! Wait till you wash your hands with this glorious bar of soap. You will love it and the contents are high quality and gentle for everyone.
6. Red editing pen and pencil case: What writer doesn’t always need a red editing pen handy? Because the pencil case is mesh, you always know what’s inside.
7. Writing sticker: This oval shaped, high quality WriteDay vinyl sticker would look nice on your laptop or the cover of a journal.
8. Books By My Friends promotions: This box includes a bookmark for The Mermaid Riot.
9. Office supply: Keep the office, tote bag, closet, or car smelling nifty with this hilarious cat sitting on a stack of books air freshener.
10. Thoughtfulls popout greeting: These are my fun and favorite way to share good vibes and a writing prompt!
