Hey, Diana! Thanks for getting the comments off to a great start. I'll never forget reading about "deadlines" back in journalism class. Stuck with me. So glad you like the story. Stay tuned!

Thanks you so much for those wonderful memories and the comments on deadline. I tried to avoid using deadline for students, but due date does not have near the impact.

My writing journey began about the age of six or seven, using crayons and construction paper to assemble short "books" about a horse named Cory. (I'd completely forgotten about those books and that horse until I find them while organizing some old boxes of miscellaneous documents.) It continued with poetry, including a poem comparing the days of school to peas in a pod and published in the local paper's "Youth Said It" column. My first attempt at a novel was a bizarre pastiche of fantasy, autobiographical elements, and about 50 pages of Call of the Wild more or less plagiarized but with a dragon instead of a dog. My mother, who I hope has been amply rewarded in some delightful afterlife, typed up the 200 pages of single-spaced pencil scrawl and bound it together so I could feel "published."

What an awesome story, Karen! I love that your Mom typed up your story for you and bound it like a book. What a precious, meaningful beginning to your writing career. Not over yet, is it? Thanks for the share. I loved it!
