WRITEDAY WRITING TIP WEDNESDAY
“To Business Card or Not?”
Having a business card as a writer is something I assumed everyone did, but I often encounter many writers without one. Because money is exchanged, writing IS a business, and professionals meet, greet, and remember each other by exchanging business cards. There are now interesting alternatives like digital business cards, which I have not tried, but there are also scads of inexpensive, appealing to look at, and cleverly shaped business cards. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on them, and the printing websites always have a way to design your own with templates to use where you type in your own information. Don’t know where to start? Contact me and I’ll give you some ideas, but here are the places I have used and recommend:
VistaPrint offers a sometimes overwhelming assortment of options for just about every promotional need you could have. When I get lost while designing something new, calling customer service (which I have done many times with great results) always fixes the problem. Product, prices, and shipping have never disappointed me for ten+ years. My only complaint is that they do not offer refunds only store credit.
UPrinting offers all the business promotional products you can imagine. The quality is super, but sometimes the prices are a bit higher than others. Compare before you buy. I’ve been happy with all of the products I’ve bought from UPrinting, and they have drop shipped for me at no extra charge which helps me get promo items to writing conferences when I only have so much money for shipping.
Moo is a trendy option for business cards. They offer a variety of papers and templates.
Canva There is a certain learning curve involved with designing promotional items at Canva. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be up all night making cool things like ads, business cards, and banners. Almost everything you see in this newsletter is made in Canva. I’m still learning it. Customer service and I don’t have the best history, but I’m not afraid to click and see what happens (much to my IT husband’s dismay sometimes). I like Canva. They have a printing option, and I’ve been told by others that it works great and the product they printed with Canva was very nice.
Do you have a writer business card? Why or why not? Tried any other sources for printing promotional items?

I use VistaPrint - but have found it difficult to include all 7 books I've published on one and.
Great topic, Joy. I've had business cards for years from a printer in my town (I try to shop local first). Then I tried bookmarks featuring covers of my series for events and they were popular. I noticed at appearances people were more apt to pick up a bookmark than a business card.
For my latest thriller, Fruit of the Poisonous Tree, I had bookmarks printed that feature the new book cover and sales links on one side, and covers of the rest of my books on the other side. I can hand out bookmarks as a small token gift w/o feeling like I'm pushing people to take a business card.
