VOCABULARY BUILDING: WORDS I LOVE
Today is International Subscription Day 2024

WRITEDAY WRITING TIP WEDNESDAY
“Vocabulary Building: Words I Love!”
One of the reasons I didn’t like school was the Friday spelling or the vocabulary tests. Every Friday morning when the alarm clock interrupted my sleep, the first thing on my mind was whether or not I was prepared for that day’s quiz. Now that I’ve been a writer, book coach, and educator for 40 years, I get it. Readers lose interest and get a little peeved by reading the same word multiple times unless it is to prove a particular point. Even so, the alphabet can be arranged in so many ways that it can be fun to use different words rather than the same one over and over. But this can be tedious also. Find a happy middle ground.
I became a writer because of an absolute worship of words from an early age. Despite not enjoying the weekly spelling and vocabulary exams in school, I learned that words are power and for word nerds such as myself a source of study and contemplation. To make the process of continuing to develop my vocabulary more appealing, I now call it “Words I Love”. I have several notebooks with this written on the front in which I collect words while I’m reading. The categories are free form and are sometimes alphabetical and sometimes descriptive explaining how a word can be used. When I’m writing long form narratives like a novel, I keep the notebooks nearby for inspiration and so I don’t have to use the same word over and over and over again.
Do you have any tricks or tips for increasing your vocabulary?
