WRITEDAY WRITING TIP WEDNESDAY
“What is Your Learning Style? Is It VARK?”
Teachers know that their classrooms hold a variety of learning styles, and they develop lessons accordingly. Public speakers generally take learning styles into consideration as they plan what they will say, in what order, and if they will supply any visual support or examples to help the message stick. Would knowing the particulars of your personal learning style make you a better writer? I think so.
Multiple theories about learning styles have been developed since the 1920’s as educators of children and adults strive to deliver new, important material to their students with an effort to make the learning engaging, successful, and enjoyable.
It’s no secret that one of the secrets to becoming a published author is to stay up to date on the latest industry developments. The changes happen rather quickly, especially in the last ten years as technology and socio-economic factors have become elements to keep top-of-mind as you grow your writing/publishing career. There are also new ways, delivery systems, to educate oneself such as podcasts and online webinars that provide a mountain of mostly helpful information that you can consider applying to your own situation.
There are in-person and online virtual conferences, podcasts, books, coaching, trial and error, and enrolling in courses aimed at improving your writing skills, production abilities, social media savvy, and marketing techniques. How do you know which delivery system works best for you as far as gleaning the important, applicable information you need? The answer is to know your strengths as far as your learning style and seek out the information you need offered through the delivery system that makes the most sense to you. For example, if you prefer to learn new skills by reading the instructions, your learning style strengths will include visual and reading/writing. If you would rather dive in and see what happens, you are definitely a kinesthetic learner.
Instead of telling you to dive in and see how deep the water is later, I’ve done some research and recommend this site for a quick, accurate, noninvasive (no email required) FREE online questionnaire that will help you and your students discover the best learning delivery system for you. I’ve done a test drive on several visual, aural, reading, and kinesthetic quizzes, and I like this one because you can answer with more than one choice. I feel like the quiz results are more accurate because of this option since the questions are generally not black and white; there is some gray area. It’s called VARK-Learn. I would love to know about your results! Click “questionnaire” in the navigation menu at the top.
Or maybe you already know your best learning style. What is it? Mine is reading/writing. LOL!
Be well, write well,
~Joy
