Welcome, Joey, to Books By My Friends! I’m anxious to share your book with readers today, so let’s begin.
JH: What’s the blurb for your book When Your Heart Breaks, It’s Opening to Love?
JG: It is possible to turn your heartbreak into happiness. The warm, compassionate style of When Your Heart Breaks, It’s Opening to Love, will make you feel as though you’re talking with a close friend, one who understands heartbreak because she’s been there herself. A true friend who doesn’t sugarcoat the necessary steps for healing. The kind of friend who consistently delivers realistic advice. Readers say this book helped them: • Come to terms with the insecurities that caused a relationship to unravel. • Manage the rollercoaster of emotions after a breakup. • Avoid getting hooked into an ex’s drama. • Find authentic closure. • Develop the patience needed for genuine healing to root. • Deepen self-worth and grow in self-love. • Make wiser choices in future relationships. If you have been cheated on, or had your heart broken, and you want to move forward, and if it feels like your world is disintegrating because the person you love has left, or if you simply want closure from your ex, this book will help you emerge from heartbreak stronger and happier than you thought possible.
JH: What inspired you to write this particular book, Joey?
JG: Reader demand! In 1996, I began writing "Ask Joey," a relationship advice column in the Sacramento News & Review newspaper. The column attracted 300,000 readers each week. Every time I answered a question about how to heal from heartbreak, readers would write in and ask me to collect my responses on the topic and compile them in a book. In 2014, I finally did. After suffering my own heart breaks, and gleaning insights that allowed me to grow in self-love and love for others, I'm grateful to be of service. It's important to let others know they are understood and are not alone during a time when many feel otherwise.
JH: What one thing do you love most about writing?
JG: What a great question! I love the magic of a story unfolding on the page, especially when it leads me to a better understanding of myself.
JH: What’s next for you in the way of writing/publishing?
JG: I'm at work on a memoir about dreams and healing. I was born in Belize and raised with a profound sense of the importance of dreams and how to interpret them. Back in the 1990s, I taught dream interpretation workshops, including to teen boys. I wrote about that for Hippocampus Literary magazine (https://hippocampusmagazine.com/2021/09/last-shot-by-joey-garcia/). I'm offering dream workshops again, on Zoom and in Belize, for adult writers. It's been exciting to watch the growth in skills and joy as my workshop participants develop as writers and make life choices that make them happier and more fulfilled. I continue to work as an author platform coach. Helping author-to-be build sustainable national platforms is another level of dream work for me. It's exciting to support people in launching literary careers that make their dreams come true.
