Collaborative Stage Directing: A Guide to Creating and Managing a Positive Theatre Environment (Routledge/Taylor & Francis, 2019) is perfect for drama students, veteran directors, and any lover of theatre. This fresh approach to the foundation of stage directing - the communication and leadership skills - is quite unique. Filled with vignettes that demonstrate key concepts throughout, the book also includes three short plays that can to be used as practical application exercises.

Untethered tells the story of growing up with a mentally ill, alcoholic father and the

experience of raising a mentally ill daughter. It follows the author's journey through

multiple miscarriages and the “untethering” of minds, relationships and pregnancies.

Untethered is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit through the author's

unravelling.

My latest book, UNBROKEN CHAINS (Beacon Press), will come out in paperback in April.

https://www.beacon.org/cw_contributorinfo.aspx?ContribID=13771&Name=Melissa+Hope+Ditmore

UNBROKEN CHAINS sets forth the harrowing stories of human trafficking survivors and grounds their accounts in the long history of US indentured servitude, looking to its iterations in chattel slavery, Chinese contract labor, and prison labor. In this groundbreaking investigation of American trafficking, Ditmore unveils the unnerving reality that forced labor permeates many industries beyond sex work: in almost every aspect of consumption, people who create our everyday necessities are working amid inescapable exploitation, often without pay. The book ends with practical advice for people who want to help end human trafficking.

Unbroken Chains tells these workers’ stories: They are nannies for New York City’s diplomatic elites and door-to-door magazine salespeople in the American South. A trafficked person may have harvested your produce, sewn your clothes, or cleaned your apartment lobby. Ditmore offers readers an illuminating window on the world of forced labor, which exists within our own, and a road map for participating in its destruction.

I love your Books By My Friends newsletter, and have learned about writers I might not have heard of otherwise! Thank you!

Make Every Move a Meditation - Available wherever fine books are sold!

What do you think of when you hear the word meditation? A quiet room filled with monks? An Instagram influencer? What about moving meditation? Yoga? Tai Chi? For too long, meditation in books has focused on specific periods of meditation, rather than mediation through fitness or daily activities. What if lifting weights, dancing with your love, or walking across a room counted? What if you could use exercise as meditation? What if you could make every move a meditation?

In Make Every Move a Meditation, award-winning author, meditation leader, and mental health advocate Nita Sweeney shows us fitness can be mindfulness. She teaches us how to bring meditation and mindfulness into any activity by incorporating centuries-old techniques. Studies show that both exercise and meditation reduce anxiety, stabilize blood pressure, improve mood and cognition, and lead to a deeper self-relationship and wisdom. Movement is medicine, and meditation is medicine.

Inside you’ll learn to:

* Turn exercise into a meditation tool.

* Make any activity a mindful practice.

* Enjoy the benefits of meditation while getting fit.

If you like meditation books and best sellers such as Think Like a Monk, Practicing Mindfulness, or Breath, you’ll love Make Every Move a Meditation.

Hey Chad! Thanks for sharing you book info. It sounds awesome. I don't know what Muay Thai kickboxing is compared to the what we do in aerobics class. What's the difference?

Happy holidays!

Chad E's avatar

Hi and happy Holidays!!! Thanks for the great question. When I operated a kickboxing school in the 90s the kickboxing aerobics was a very welcome part of the zeitgeist!! It brought people in the door who probably wouldn't otherwise have known about it.

Mostly whats happening in the aerobics class is that it takes the techniques and modifies them, taking the exercise part of it and toning down the combat parts 😊

Muay Thai/Thai boxing is a specific type of boxing from Thailand that uses the hands, feet, shins, elbows and knees as weapons. There are rituals associated with it in Thailand, and the style was adopted by the Dutch, in particular over the years and used in kickboxing and mixed martial arts.

You’ll see the specific type of leg kick today even in pro wrestling, since mixed martial arts has become influential and uses a lot of the Thai techniques.

There weren’t many books on it at the turn of the last century, only one from 1987. I pitched the publisher of that book and added sections on weight training and general exercise to the book - making it a two in one concept that might have broader appeal.

It’s had a long shelf life, and there are now lots of books on the sport, but it’s nice to have been among the first 😊

Thanks for this great substack and blog, what a great way to discover new books!

Laurie spoon-feeds orphans in Ethiopia, performs 108 bows at a Buddhist mountain temple, walks shelter dogs in Peru, milks goats in Fuerteventura, and gets lost in Mexico, all the while navigating dating at midlife.

After four years of traveling, Laurie’s return “home” becomes an unexpected adventure of its own when she ends up in Arkansas and meets Bruce, a bird-loving, bearded Quaker and then struggles to reconcile her need for freedom with her longing to feel settled.
